When someone tells me
"Thomas, my clients only want one-off projects"
I smile.
I nod.
But inside my head, a tiny voice screams the truth…
What they're really saying is:
"I have no clue how to show my clients that ongoing work is worth a single shiny dime."
That's it.
That's the whole thing.
I had a client say this to me last month.
Same sad song. Same sad violin.
He swore up and down his clients were "just one-off types."
Like they were a special breed of human born allergic to monthly invoices.
We sat down.
We tore his offer apart like a toddler with a birthday gift.
Then we built it back up. But this time, we made one tiny change…
We showed his clients the goods.
We showed them what life looks like when the work keeps going.
Less time spent putting out fires.
Better results month after month.
Fewer headaches.
And you know what happened?
The same clients who wanted "just one quick project" started asking about retainers…
Then they started asking about year-long deals.
One guy even asked if he could pay for a whole year up front.
Like a kid begging to give away his lunch money.
Funny how that works.
Here's my point…
If you helped a client win once, you can certainly help them keep winning...
Even a maintenance plan for peace's sake.
Turn them into a slot machine that keeps paying out, where everyone keeps winning.
The casino and the player.
You just have to show them the path.
Remember, people don't buy your "service"…
Nobody wakes up dreaming of buying ad management or web design or whatever flavor of magic you sell.
They buy outcomes.
They buy
- more sales
- more leads
- more peace of mind
- more date nights with the wife because the business is finally humming
Ongoing outcomes equal ongoing money.
Because if you have to find new clients every month just to keep the lights on…
It’s gonna be a lot tougher to scale.
So next time a client says, "I just want this one little project,"
don't whine about how clients these days are so commitment-shy.
Either
1. Look them in the eye, and show them the ROI and outcome of your plan
OR
2. Sell your project,
but upsell them when it’s done on what life looks like in 6, 12, 24 months when you keep doing your thing.
Make the long-term deal feel like the only option a sane person would pick.
Otherwise it’s truly a lose-lose for everybody.
Go fix your pitch or back-end offer, and let that recurring revenue start flow’n.
