Planning out your week can seem daunting, but it's surprisingly easy and has huge benefits.
We’ve all heard that a great day starts the night before… But I believe that a great week starts the week before.
Planning your day the night before takes almost as much time as planning your entire week (I know it sounds crazy, but try it) — My 3-step process typically takes less than 10 minutes. Plus, I find it a lot less likely to skip planning when it’s not a daily requirement.
Taking a few minutes to plan out your week on a regular basis will help you:
- Get clarity
- Be more present
- Reduce overwhelm
- Make progress toward your goals
Here’s the exact 3-step process I follow once per week (Sundays for me):
- Look through your open projects (I use a Notion Task Manager)
- Identify 3-5 goals (no more) that would make for an excellent week
- Create time blocks in your calendar to clarify when you’ll be working on them
Time Blocking is critical because it helps create realistic goals for the week. If you can't find the time in your calendar, you'll have to ask yourself... Is it important enough to replace something else? This helps you avoid overcommitting and feeling overwhelmed.
Trusting your calendar 😅
Being mentally present is vital for productivity, and planning my weeks in advance has been the best way to do so. Because I've taken the time to plan, I'm able to place full trust in my calendar and focus on execution without second-guessing how I’m spending my time.
Take time to plan out your week. Then trust your calendar, and follow it 🫡
But what if I don’t have a list of projects to create goals from?
Then you need to take a couple of steps back before clarifying your weekly goals:
- Do a brain dump and list out all of the tasks and projects that you’re juggling
- Identify the 3-5 projects that you’re going to prioritize over the next month
These two preliminary steps can take some time, but that’s ok — Clarity is king.
Go ahead and try it: On Sundays…
- Look through your open projects
- Identify 3-5 goals
- Time block them
See you all next Thursday 👋
