How To Review Your Life Areas

Our productive output is ultimately a result of how well we’re balancing all of our Life Areas.

It is very difficult to focus and maximize productivity when an important Life Area isn’t optimal or is being neglected. These Areas will continually impact our life and productivity in some way shape or form.

Reviewing my Life Areas on a regular cadence (quarterly) allows me to have a pulse on my life as a whole, preventing any one Area to go unnoticed and create friction.

At the highest level, Life Areas include:

  • Health
  • Family
  • Wealth

The very first step is to identify the Life Areas that you care to keep a pulse on. For me, it looks something like this (I use Whimsical.com):

I began by listing out all of the Areas, followed by the individual components that I’ve decided are responsible for satisfying each Area and ending with the items that are responsible for satisfying each component.

Then when I review my Life Areas, it’s easy to quickly see if I need to make changes to the things I care about most or dive deeper into those that are lagging before they become a problem.

The actual process you follow to review your Life Areas is less important than it is that you have a system to review and keep a pulse on your life as a whole on an ongoing basis. It should serve as a reminder of the things you’ve decided matter most and prevent them from being neglected.

As you likely already know, I’m a big fan of weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual reviews. I can’t say enough about the value they bring me. The easiest way for me to make sure I take the necessary time to review my Life Areas is to simply add a checklist item to my already existing Quarterly Review.

You can learn more about my review system here.

When you have clarity on the things that matter most and the confidence of knowing that they’re being attended to, you’re able to truly focus and push your current goals forward.

If an Area is being neglected, then this will serve as a trigger to re-prioritize.

Go ahead and try it:

  1. Do a brain dump of all of the important areas in your life
  2. Identify the individual components that make up each area
  3. Create a recurring calendar event to take a moment and review these areas quarterly
