Don’t wait until you need someone full-time

Don't wait until you need someone full-time before hiring. This creates (a lot) of stress on you and your business.

Most founders wait too long because they feel they're not ready. Primarily because of the false belief that they don't have enough work or resources.

This is the perfect storm for an unsuccessful hire and a failing business.

Waiting until this point will lead you to a breaking point from the amount of work you're forced to juggle, and the new hire immediately responsible for a ton of unclarified responsibilities.

This is the perfect storm for an unsuccessful hire and a failing business.

The secret? You don’t need to wait until needing someone full-time. In fact, you shouldn’t.

There are several reasons why this is a much better approach, but to name a few:

  1. It allows both parties to test the relationship (I’m a big fan of test projects, too)
  2. You get operational relief sooner, allowing you to focus more on growth
  3. You and your new hire will have more time to create SOPs

Proactively identifying processes worth delegating earlier in your entrepreneurial journey is a huge advantage for growth. You may also realize you never needed someone full-time to begin with, saving you and the business resources that can be spent elsewhere.

I'm sure you can already relate to areas you've been avoiding delegating. So, how do you go about finding the perfect part-time hire?

Well, it’s never been easier to hire incredible part-time talent.

Here’s my 5-step process for onboarding part-time team members:

  1. Record yourself doing the process with a tool like Loom
  2. Clarify what done looks like and frequency (daily, weekly, etc.)
  3. Create a job post on a platform like Upwork
  4. Share your recording with the new hire
  5. Ask them to create an SOP

Step 5 is something I recently learned. Even if you already have a document walking through the process, asking your hire to create an SOP based on your video (step 1) is a great way to check and make sure they understand it.

Assumptions are our worst enemy. As one of my favorite quotes go:

“All error springs from flawed assumptions. If there are no assumptions, there can be no error" -Felix Dennis

Don’t wait until you and your business are struggling to get help. Hire part-time talent, get operational relief, and gradually build the necessary systems.

Go ahead and try it:

  • Identify areas worth delegating
  • Clarify what done looks like
  • Hire someone part-time

See you all next Thursday 👋
