Most businesses are in love with job titles.
“Head of Growth.”
“VP of Ops.”
“Chief Very Important Person.”
Sounds fancy.
Looks great on LinkedIn.
They also don’t do much…
Because job titles don’t drive action.
Numbers do.
Here’s the problem with titles:
We think it comes with super powers.
“If I hire a Marketing Manager, marketing will be handled.”
“If I promote someone to Director, results will go up.”
But titles don’t tell people:
- what matters most
- what winning looks like
- What they should focus on today
So teams drift.
Some people chill.
Some people drown.
No one knows if they’re winning.
But everyone is always busy.
That’s not a motivation problem.
That’s a measurement problem…
The solution —> Every Role Needs a Number
Imagine playing a game with no score.
No points.
No clock.
No finish line.
That’s what work feels like without metrics.
No number = Vibes only
“Handle customer support” is foggy.
“Zero open tickets” is clear.
One causes stress.
The other creates focus.
When people know their number:
- they pick better priorities
- they need less babysitting
- they fix problems faster
No extra meetings.
No pep talks.
No shiny new title.
Just a clear number.
Because a title with no metric is just decoration.
But a metric with no title still gets the job done.
If a role exists, it needs:
One owner and One clear number.
Here’s a simple test:
Look at each role and ask…
“What number tells me this is going well?”
If you can’t answer in one sentence, the role is unclear.
And unclear roles don’t scale.
Metrics do.
That’s how teams move faster, stress less, and actually win.
