Ensuring the Right People Hold the Right Accountabilities
The realm of entrepreneurship is a lot like directing a symphony. From my venture into air quality testing, to rapid business launches after natural disasters, each stage of my journey has felt like mastering a unique instrument. We have a team of talented individuals, each with their own distinct sound. When everything aligns, the result is a harmonious masterpiece.
But the challenge? When a standout team member isn’t quite in tune. So, how do we ensure everyone is aligned? That’s what this post is all about.
Core Values: The Right Musician
Before you can begin directing your symphony, you must be clear on the score. In the business world, this means clarifying your core values. These values are the backbone of your company's identity and serve as a guiding force in every decision, big or small.
Every team member should not only be familiar with your core values but also genuinely share them. This ensures that the essence of your business is consistently reflected in every action and decision.
At a high level, my core values currently look like this:
- Simple — Avoid complexity at all costs
- Results — Always have the end in mind
- Truth — Value honest feedback and factual information
- Systems — Create processes for consistency and predictability
- Positive — We do things and work with people that are energizing
- Health — Uphold practices that benefit team and client well-being
It’s critical that your team understand what your core values are, and if they don’t all resonate, they’re likely not a good fit. There are enough great people out there that will align with your core values, so don’t settle. This is in everyone’s best interests.
Accountabilities: The Right Instrument
Accountabilities in a business are like the essential notes in a musical score. These are tasks that must be consistently executed to keep the business alive and thriving. They take place IN the business and are non-negotiable.
You may have assembled a fantastic team, but if they're handling the wrong accountabilities, you might find yourself facing more noise than harmony. Imagine a virtuoso violinist attempting to play the drums; the innate talent is there, but it's misdirected. Their skills and passions could be out of sync with the tasks they're assigned. The result? A wasted potential and an out-of-tune performance.
It's paramount to align the right person with the right accountability. This means diving deep into understanding both the individual's unique strengths and interests and the core tasks that drive your business. With this alignment, you're setting the stage for a harmonious, productive ensemble.

With a clarified set of core values and an understanding of your team's skills and passions, the stage is set. All that's left is to ensure that each member is primed to play their part to the best of their abilities, creating a harmonious and successful business symphony. This means both having clear core values and clearly defined accountabilities.
Go ahead and try it:
- Clarify your core values
- Communicate them to the team
- Make sure they resonate with everyone
- Clearly define your company’s accountabilities
- Confirm you have the right team holding the right accountabilities
